Penn Adventures...

Well it's now been 5 months to the day (well come the 11th of October) since the day I hopped on the plane and flew out of a SUNNY and HOT Australia! I've been around the UK and did Europe in 3 months ... many adventures had and many stories to tell ... so far I've been to France, Italy, Austria, Germany, Leichtenstein, Switzerland, the Netherlands (yes + Amsterdam!!!) and boy have I loved it! In a couple of weeks I'm off to San Sebastian in Spain for a week of surfing and chillaxing at the beach and partying in one of the best towns in Spain! CAN'T WAIT!

But right now I'm stuck at the school. although dont' get me wrong I'm loving it! Although  am missing the aussie weather ... I hear its about 38 degrees over there ... and I'm assuming with that sort of temperature comes SUNSHINE???!!! I haven't seen the sun since I don't know when ... it's classed a fine day here when there isn't a hint of grey ... just WHITE! and boy is it getting COLD!

Been quite busy here at the school ... the nursery where I've been spending most of my time is hectic at the moment and I'm doing a lot of hockey playing and coaching which is keeping me busy. But there is one thing I'm missing (other than a decent drink of bundy and coke) and that's cricket with all you guys! I haven't picked up (let alone SEEN) a cricket bat or ball in months! (They don't really play cricket at this school ... it's lacrosse ... which I'm learning to play may I add!!!).

Well that's about it for now ... I shall let you all know how a week of chilling on the beach in Spain goes! May even send a post card haha!

GO THE REDS!

Missing you all
love Mel xx

The day was a huge success with plenty of new players enthusiastic to get involved along with a few familiar faces as well!

Perhaps the most anticipated event of the day was the post-training BBQ ' complete with lots of free giveaways and copious amounts of nudie juices to ensure everyone was re-hydrated and kept in good spirits (thanks Davo!).

Congrats must go to the club for organising such a successful event ' a fantastic way to welcome all our new players/supporters and kick off the start to an exciting season ahead.

I am pleased to announce that we have a new Deputy President, Bronwyn Calver, joining your Club's Executive Committee for the 2007-08 Season.

Bron's passion for Gordon is legendary. For the past 15 seasons she has driven up from Canberra every weekend during summer as a key player in Gordon's First Grade Team. Since joining Gordon, Bron has captained First Grade, played for NSW and Australia and most recently for her home Territory, the ACT. Bron has already committed to attending Committee Meetings, no easy task given the distance involved, and started by joining our first meeting of the new season on Tuesday night 31 July.

Bron has made an outstanding contribution to Gordon over the years and we are excited that she has taken this step to becoming more involved by sharing her experience for our 2007-08 administration.

Thanks Bron!

Regards

Dutch International

Dutch International

For the first part of the season, Gordon have secured the services of a Dutch international - Violet Wattenberg.

Violet is a relative latecomer to cricket having only played her first official game when she was 21.  However she's made up for the late start by playing lots of matches in both women's and men's cricket in the comparatively short season in Holland.  She also spends considerable time practising when not working as a provincial government lawyer.

Rather than strength, Violet relies on technique for her batting (she normally plays as an opener for Rood & Wit, her women's team in Holland) combined with agility and footwork for her wicketkeeping. She's always looking to improve as a player, on and off the field.

Last year Rood & Wit won the women's national championships which counts as one of the greatest moments in Violet's short career.

She has been fortunate enough to be selected as a keeper/batsman for the Dutch national team and will be trying to help them qualify for the next Women's World Cup in Australia in 2009.

Besides playing cricket, Violet likes going out and having a drink, shopping, travelling, reading and trying other sports.  Violet's player profile can be viewed here.

GDWCC Club Coach Appointed

GDWCC Club Coach Appointed

New Club Coach Appointed

On behalf of the Committee it is my great pleasure to announce the appointment of our very own Charlotte "Char" - "Chucky" Anneveld to the role of Club Coach for the 2007/08 Season. Char is one of our longest serving, most passionate players whose commitment to the ongoing success of the Gordon Club is outstanding. Char brings to the role not only her experience as a Club player and First Grade Captain, but also the experience gained as a long-term member of the highly successful NSW Breakers, and now as a member of the 2007/08 Australian Squad.

Personally, I have known Char since she was a youngster and it is very rewarding to see the success she is having on the field and her appointment as Coach is confirmation of her long-term commitment to the only senior Club she has played for. Char is a highly respected member of the Club and we look forward to everyone attending training to take advantage of this appointment.

Watch out for training announcements from Char, including details of the upcoming annual "Come'n'Try" Day on 19 August where you will see special guest coaches in attendance.

Congratulations Char and GO GORDON!
