After a bye and a washout, we finally got to get back on the park to play some cricket. Another winning toss by our el capitano, Emma “Norma” Sherwood, meant the Gordon team again got the opportunity to bat first on Saturday at Bella Vista Oval.
Some initial solid bowling from Parramatta-Blacktown restricted our openers, Tracy “Hankers” Hancock and Kristen for a couple of overs, until both decided to hit out with some lovely pull shots and straight drives. Hankers went on to retire for 30, which was followed by a great (and at times comical) partnership between Annelie and Jane, who both retired on 30+. Lisa “Jackie” Chan and Norma paired well, until Jackie lost her wicket in an amusing run-out. The team ended up scoring an imposing and well-crafted 2-169.
Carly and Jane opened the bowling and Paramatta’s openers were prepared to hit out, with some extraordinary leg-side drives on display. Hankers (2-2) and Jackie (4-2) bowled well together, taking between them 6 wickets for only four runs. Jackie achieved her best bowling figures for the season so far and bowled economically and accurately, tempting Parramatta’s batsman into a few lofted shots and managing a diving caught and bowled. Norma also bowled a maiden over and Edwina “Eddie” Chappel took her first wicket for the season.
Carly finished Parramatta-Blacktown’s innings thanks to an extraordinary direct-hit runout that was thrown from the outfield. It was an excellent way to finish the match, with everyone making a contribution to it’s outcome.
Report thanks to Eddie Chappel
